New benchmark report: Psyclone AIOS vs NATS, ROS 2, iceoryx & more

We’ve published a new technical report benchmarking Psyclone AIOS against the messaging and orchestration systems teams actually reach for — NATS, ROS 2 (Fast-DDS, in three configurations), Eclipse iceoryx, eCAL and ZeroMQ.

The methodology is deliberately conservative: 10 independent trials per condition, 100,000 messages per trial, 95% confidence intervals, CPU pinning, and one consistent one-way per-hop latency definition across every harness — replicated on bare metal. The headline is reported without spin: out of the box, Psyclone beats NATS at every payload size, sits within a few microseconds of default ROS 2 at small payloads, and posts the tightest, most predictable tails of any system tested (p99.9 ≤ 124 µs at 64 KB, where NATS reaches 761 µs). After expert tuning, ROS 2 wins on raw median — and we explain plainly what that tuning costs and gives up.

Raw latency is table stakes. The report’s real thesis is that Psyclone pairs competitive default speed with a class of runtime-reconfiguration capabilities — sub-millisecond global rerouting, trigger batching and multi-input joins, ephemeral compute, live subscription rewiring, and in-place reprogramming (including code) — that static-topology brokers and DDS middleware don’t offer as first-class operations. Every system compared, Psyclone included, is open source and independently reproducible.
